What happens in our brains when we grow up multilingual? This intriguing question is the focus of the present study. Based on the results of a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study of 20 multilingual Ladin participants conducted at the University Hospital in Ulm, a detailed description and analysis of brain activities during a picture naming test conducted in Ladin, Italian, German, and English is presented. The results of the study show that the different languages exhibit largely overlapping brain activation, which underlies the picture naming and language processing processes, while the neural activity correlated with the individual languages can only be captured through a few insignificant differences.
