Product details

This study makes an interdisciplinary contribution to the research on horror fantasy. Christiane Lemke applies approaches and questions from English studies on Gothic novels and Gothic tales to the works of renowned Scandinavian authors, including Hans Christian Andersen, Karen Blixen, Ingmar Bergman, and Marie Hermanson. The aim is to provide a model analysis that makes the categorization and inscription of texts from various genres such as fairy tales, novellas/short stories, novels, and films comprehensible within the broader context of horror fantasy. The starting point and foundation of the individual analyses is the psychoanalytic concept of the phantasm. Drawing on theories from Sigmund Freud, Melanie Klein, Jacques Lacan, among others, it examines objects of infantile fear and fascination, dreams and delusions, hallucinations, primal scenes, and complexes.
