Product details

The Cold War in post-war Berlin was a peak of political journalism. Under Allied control, numerous newspapers and magazines emerged, promising renewal, orientation, and democracy. In the "newspaper paradise Berlin," journalists fought with all the rules of the trade for the sentiments of the population. Whether it was forced unification, the Berlin Blockade, or June 17, 1953: time and again, the press became a weapon in the inter-Allied struggle for the distribution of power in Berlin. In this study, historian and publicist Christoph Marx vividly describes and analyzes the unique post-war development of the Berlin press landscape through the lens of the most important newspapers and media figures. Editorial peculiarities are examined alongside Allied press strategies, with a particular focus on the American-licensed "Tagesspiegel.".
