The spread of renewable energy in Spain has undergone impressive development in recent years. The country's pioneering role is particularly evident in that it ranked third in wind energy in terms of globally installed capacity in 2008 and second in photovoltaics. This was primarily based on an effective national support policy and the early commitment of major Spanish energy companies in an international comparison, especially in the fields of wind and solar energy. At the same time, sub- and international actors and influencing factors played an important role. Mischa Bechberger examines this development process using a political science multi-level analysis. In doing so, he identifies the key actors as well as success conditions and restrictions, and elaborates on their influence.
