The question of how humans process incoming acoustic or orthographic information has occupied linguists for some time. After all, the correct interpretation of sentences or sentence fragments is a prerequisite for successful communication. Depending on the language, native speakers employ different strategies. For instance, native English speakers identify the subject of a sentence based on word order, whereas native German speakers rely on case marking. These observations prompted researchers in foreign language studies to investigate the influence of the mother tongue on language processing and to highlight an accent in language processing. However, research on second language acquisition has so far shown little interest in this subfield of psycholinguistics, which is why the influence of the first language on sentence processing remains underexplored.
