Few professions are exposed to traumatic situations as frequently as emergency services. Nevertheless, the handling of traumatic experiences receives insufficient attention in both training and continuing education. On the contrary, Tobias Dahm has experienced during his over 16 years as a paramedic that the topic of personal psychological hygiene is often treated carelessly, if not negligently, within emergency services. Disasters such as the ICE accident in Eschede (1998), the Metrorapid accident in Emsland (2006), or more recently the shooting in Winnenden (2009) repeatedly bring the situation of emergency responders into the public spotlight and increase its relevance. In this book, Tobias Dahm examines how social workers can contribute professionally to prevention and treatment success in professions at risk of trauma.
