Product details

Moscow - foreign and mysterious, towers of red gold, cold as ice... The opening line of the well-known song by the music group Dschinghis Khan captures the German perception of Russia perfectly. However, stereotypes about the eastern neighbor persist not only in literature, music, and film, but also in German reporting on Russia, where certain characteristics have manifested that shape the discourse on Russia. The image of Russia in the media, particularly regarding current political events, is not exactly positive: Putin overshadows media reception and reinforces the image of the 'wild, barbaric East.' Julia Friedmann illustrates in her book the transformation of the image of Russia in the German media discourse from Gorbachev to Putin, using selected print media, while also addressing the shift in attitudes alongside the Russian media image.
