The Arab philosopher, judge, and physician Ibn Rushd (Latin: Averroes, 1126-1198) from al-Andalus wrote a multitude of philosophical works, primarily commentaries on the works of Aristotle, through whose Latin translations he became the definitive authority on Aristotle in Europe from the mid-13th century onward. Consequently, the Church felt compelled to condemn the so-called Averroists in the 13th century, who engaged with Ibn Rushd's commentary on Aristotle, as they believed that Aristotle's teachings contradicted church dogmas.
