Hans Deichelmann worked as a doctor in Königsberg, the former capital of East Prussia, and witnessed the encirclement of the city by the troops of the Red Army in the spring of 1945. His diary authentically and shockingly documents the suffering and death of the remaining German population. Of the 110,000 trapped German civilians in Königsberg, only 27,000 survived the ordeal. A nearly forgotten chapter of German history is brought back to life through Dr. Deichelmann's diary entries.
