Product details

The iconic, handcrafted design classics from the Auböck workshop, now in its fourth generation in Vienna, have always been ahead of their time and have shaped Austrian design across generations. The book and exhibition focus on the stylistically influential era of the interwar and post-war periods, while also referencing the experimental 1980s. The works are viewed through the lens of surrealism. For the first time, works by sculptor and textile artist Mara Uckunowa-Auböck (1895-1987), who met Carl Auböck II (1900-1957) at the Bauhaus in Weimar, are presented. The book includes newly taken photographs of the essential original works displayed in the exhibition, as well as a foreword by Lilli Hollein, texts by Kimberly Bradley about the workshop in the international design context, Nina Schedlmayer on the history of the workshop, and Bärbel Vischer on the surrealist perspective of the comprehensive oeuvre of the Auböck workshop. The work of the celebrated workshop includes mid-century home decor furniture, cutlery, keychains, smoking accessories, and much more. Exhibition at MAK, Vienna, May 15, 2024 - October 13, 2024.
