Anpassung - Abwehr - Aufbruch
German, Hans Behrens, 2017Product details
During the Weimar period and in the subsequent years of National Socialism, a German-Jewish literature emerged in Germany that responded to the changing cultural and political conditions of the time. It addressed issues of disenfranchisement, discrimination, and persecution, as well as the internal Jewish discourse on the right path during difficult times, concerning identity, the present, and the future of German Jewry. This Jewish narrative literature has only recently received greater attention in literary studies, including the works of the author Gerson Stern (1874-1954). Hans Behrens demonstrates how the contemporary and retrospective perception of the author Stern leads to a narrative stance that views Judaism as a threatened cultural system, from which it derives its appeal. Stern's literature aims to initiate processes of understanding and calls for responsibility.
