To describe the society of a country, one can roughly employ two methods: one can analyze its various areas and their interconnections with the claim of representativeness; or one can clarify a specific dimension in its different manifestations by engaging with a segment of the reality of a society. Amos Oz, the renowned Israeli author, explored the ideas, hopes, fears, and prejudices of some residents of Israel towards the end of 1982. He conversed with settlers in the West Bank, a farmer who had immigrated before the time of the British mandate, a philosophy professor at the University of Jerusalem, the editor-in-chief of a Palestinian newspaper published in Jerusalem, among others. In these conversations, the differing attitudes towards the prevailing issues in Israel emerge.
