In the shadow of World War II, the Croatian Ustasha movement sought to violently create an ethnically homogeneous nation-state. The disintegration of Yugoslavia by the Wehrmacht enabled the Ustasha to establish a terror regime primarily targeting Serbs, Jews, and Roma. This unleashed a civil war that claimed the lives of approximately 500,000 people. Korb examines the motives, interests, and scope of action of the Ustasha, the course of the violence employed, and the interplay of civil war dynamics and brutalization. He describes a complex spiral of violence involving Croatian, Serbian, German, and Italian actors. His study compellingly reveals the multifaceted nature of the events, outlines the situational logic of violence, and thus provides new insights for Holocaust and violence research.
