Image making of the prisoners
German, Hans Prinzhorn, Thomas Prinzhorn, 2019Product details
'Art of the Prisoners' (1926) was the second book by Hans Prinzhorn (1886-1933). With this publication, the Berlin publisher Axel Juncker hoped to build on the success of the study 'Art of the Mentally Ill' (1922), which particularly appealed to artists and art enthusiasts. However, the anticipated success did not materialize. While Prinzhorn's debut is now in its 7th edition and has been translated into five languages, this is the first reprint of 'Art of the Prisoners.' This publication also ventured into new territory. At that time, very few images of artistic works from prisons and correctional facilities were known, and the creativity of prisoners was not valued any more than that of institutional patients. Prinzhorn presented an impressive selection of images, drawings, reliefs, sculptures, and handicrafts from German detention centers in 88 illustrations, some of which are in color.
