Images surround us, shape our lives and learning. They play with colors and shapes, presenting what exists in the world or what does not currently exist. They bring together the compatible and the incompatible: the concrete and the abstract, the real and the fictional. Images can have an indexical, illustrative function; they can be affirmative and manipulative. On the other hand, images can also obscure, alienate, ironize, and criticize. Images are an interdisciplinary phenomenon. The authors of this book adopt various didactic perspectives from the fields of language, literature, art, media, and educational science. Their contributions deal with paintings, children's drawings, photographs, picture books, comics, feature films, commercials, visualizations, and typography.
