In recent years, artificial intelligence has been generating images that are increasingly indistinguishable from human-made photos, paintings, or drawings. The results are becoming better and more realistic, accurately reflecting the specifications set by users. Technically, these artificial images are often perfect, but can they also be considered works of art? Although the process is new, art theory offers approaches to answer this question: the handling of copies, plagiarism, or forgery; the technical (re)producibility of artworks and their aura; the phenomenon of kitsch; the increasing mediacy of artistic tools; action-theoretical approaches to production; and above all, a reception-centered methodology.
