Die Wieskirche als inszenierende Rahmung des Gegeisselten Heilands
German, 2019Product details
The Pilgrimage Church of the Scourged Savior, commonly known as Wies Church, is one of the most significant creations of southern German Rococo and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Built between 1745 and 1754, it presents pilgrims with the image of a scourged Savior for veneration. Light, ornamentation, and color, along with painting, architecture, and sculpture, frame the figure of Christ like a festive setting, defining its significance and shaping the relationship of the faithful to it. To illustrate the underlying staging strategies that characterize Wies Church, a comprehensive examination of the architecture and furnishings of this masterpiece of Baroque church architecture is undertaken for the first time. Furthermore, the role of the Catholic Enlightenment of the 18th century in shaping the specific presentation of the Scourged Savior is highlighted.
