Product details

The book by art historian Huberta Weigl is the first comprehensive monograph on the Austrian monastery architect Jakob Prandtauer. Against the backdrop of years of archival studies, the author sheds light on the history of significant monastery complexes such as Melk, Herzogenburg, Garsten, and St. Florian. The publication makes it clear that while Prandtauer was a specialist in monastery architecture, he also engaged in numerous other building projects: he constructed castles, pleasure buildings, palaces, townhouses, parish courtyards, parish churches, wine cellars, storage facilities – indeed, his diverse work even includes bridges and barracks! All these buildings are honored in the 138-item catalog of works, presented in both text and images. Throughout, Huberta Weigl repeatedly draws attention to the ambitious clients whose often idiosyncratic wishes Prandtauer had to address.
