This skull identification book aims to fill a gap in the identification literature for native mammals with detailed texts and numerous illustrations. It is intended for a broad audience: zoologists, paleontologists, archaeologists, or veterinarians, as well as teachers, hunters, and interested laypeople. The text and the key use only a few scientific terms or jargon from hunting. The book covers 57 species or taxa of medium and large mammals in Central Europe, including 36 originally native and nine introduced species. The golden jackal and moose are regularly encountered in Germany. Only those species of seals and whales that are regularly observed in German coastal waters are included. Additionally, since skulls of domestic animals are frequently found in nature, horses, donkeys, cattle, sheep, and goats are also addressed.
