The title is a K&ouml der - not for those who expect images in the style of Leni Riefenstahl (they are probably already deterred by the photo on the cover), but for those who sense the reference to a book written at the beginning of the last century by the French writer Raymond Roussel. Just as the linguistic images of Roussel "measure the infinite distance of the gaze to the seen" (Michel Foucault: Raymond Roussel. Paris, 1963. German Frankfurt/Main, 1989 p. 157), Wachter's images also testify to this distance - and his sad certainty of it - as well as to the impossibility of bridging the eternal gap between sign and signified in the direction of "authenticity," "closeness," and "immediacy." In his book, divided into three sections, Christian Wachter addresses questions of identity and difference with - only superficially aesthetic - images from Africa and Europe, and of various media origins (video stills, drawings, and classic analog photographs) - thus also tackling a very political topic.
