At the age of twenty, Katherine Mansfield leaves her New Zealand home to become a writer in London. However, she first finds herself pregnant in a boarding house in a Bavarian spa town. There, she can express her keen observational skills, especially when she encounters people who shed the tight corset of societal constraints during their stay. The result is razor-sharp and highly amusing stories. Through seemingly trivial matters, they highlight deeply rooted behavioral patterns, prejudices, and clichés in the early 20th century. Nina Hoss lends her voice to the pioneer of the modern short story.
