Volume 13 of the Workers' History Series follows Michael Schneider's "Under the Swastika," the 12th volume in the series, which deals with the period from 1933 to 1939. Workers played a central role in the warfare of the Third Reich. They were courted and simultaneously regulated by Nazi politics, which they partly supported but also undermined to pursue their own interests. While millions of foreign and forced laborers had to work under miserable conditions, German workers were to be shaped into willing members of the national community. Did the Nazis succeed in this? Was the German war society really a national community? Did Nazi politics actually bring about a modernization of German society? Was there political resistance from within?.
