Product details
Before Alek Minassian drove a car into a crowd in Toronto in April 2018, killing ten people, he left the following message on Facebook: "The Incel rebellion has already begun! All hail the Supreme Gentleman Elliot Rodger!" Elliot Rodger had killed six people and injured 13 others on the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 2014. He left behind a manifesto over a hundred pages long, in which he justified his actions as acts of revenge against women who had denied him love and sex, claiming they deserved death as a result. These are not the only explicitly anti-female attacks carried out by so-called "Incels." "Incels" is short for "Involuntary Celibates." They gather in online forums and image boards to lament their lack of sexual relationships, which they believe is a natural male right. At best, their thinking manifests in depression and self-pity; at worst, it glorifies child abuse, sexual violence, or femicide. However, Incels are not "black sheep" or "exceptions" within capitalist-patriarchal structures but rather a reflection of a society where the devaluation of the feminine is commonplace. Although Incels have committed numerous acts of violence and terror, the phenomenon has been only superficially analyzed in the German-speaking world. This book aims to fill that gap by tracing the history of the movement, explaining the memes and language of Incels, analyzing their ideology, and engaging in a social-psychological examination of this online cult.
