At the center of the spiritual, anthroposophical view of humanity stands the individual, each person as a unique, eternally divine being at their innermost core. Caring for and supporting elderly individuals is, from this perspective, always a search for this core in the other. In touching this core, warmth is generated, encounters take place; in these encounters, restless individuals find calm, depressed individuals experience emotional uplift, and confused individuals gain clarity, while caregivers receive strength. The quest for the true essence of the other, beyond all external signs of transience, touches a deep longing—the longing to experience one’s own immortality. Care cannot heal, but it can continually strive to create the conditions under which healing can occur in the context of dealing with sick individuals. It can engage on a physical level and enhance quality of life.
