To make Marie the Prévôté de l'Hôtel, Charles asks an old friend of his father's for a letter of recommendation. He provides the letter but, in return, abuses Marie. When her tormentor is sentenced to death a few years later, Marie is to carry out the execution. It is an opportunity that Marie does not want to miss to take proper revenge on her rapist.
