Rousseau ushered in a new era of autobiographical literature with his "Confessions." While memoir literature up to that point aimed to convey an intimate knowledge of contemporary events, Rousseau depicted the memory of the impressions received and the current feelings, thus presenting a dual state of the soul in describing his life journey.
