The correspondence between the poets Rainer Maria Rilke, Marina Tsvetaeva, and Boris Pasternak spanned four months in 1926 and consists of a total of 40 letters. Each of the three correspondents holds a unique place in European literature, having created their own poetic worlds. Rilke represented for Pasternak and Marina Tsvetaeva the embodiment of intellectual life and poetry in its entirety; Rilke's work itself served as proof to them that in a suffering world, indestructible values exist that can be cherished, preserved, and passed on. The earnest attention Rilke devoted to the two young Russians during his last difficult year of life was rooted in his lifelong cherished memories of his travels to Russia in 1899 and 1900.
