The fairy tales of Wilhelm Hauff (1802 - 1827) were published between 1824 and 1828 in three fairy tale almanacs. Each almanac contains a frame story: The Caravan; The Sheikh of Alexandria and His Slaves; The Inn in the Spessart, which serve as a link between the individual tales. The frame narrative of the third almanac, The Inn in the Spessart, is filled with dark tension. A group of travelers spends the night in an inn in the legendary, robber-infested Spessart. To dispel their fear of the robbers, they tell stories, including the tale of "The Cold Heart," a fairy tale from the Black Forest about the poor charcoal burner Peter Munk, who longs for wealth and status. Today, as in the past, the characters created by Wilhelm Hauff that populate his fairy tale world continue to enchant: Caliph Stork and Dwarf Nose.
