In her 2010 book "The Quran as a Text of Late Antiquity," published by the Verlag der Weltreligionen, Angelika Neuwirth laid the foundation for her five-volume translation and commentary of the Quran (completion expected in 2014/2015). The first volume, which follows, contains the beginnings of Muhammad's proclamation. In chronological order, starting with the presumably oldest surah 93, Neuwirth analyzes and interprets the development of his prophetic message. Each surah is presented in transliteration and a new translation, followed by an in-depth commentary. The centerpiece of each surah commentary is a verse-by-verse interpretation, which outlines not only linguistic and content-related explanations but also the intellectual engagement with the religious environment and the intra-Quranic development of central themes.
