Little Nelly lives with her grandfather, who owns a curiosity shop in London. To improve their difficult finances and secure a living for little Nelly, he secretly borrows money from the usurer Quilp, which he then loses while gambling. When he is unable to repay his debts, Nelly and her grandfather must flee and try to find their fortune anew without any savings or security. It's the poignant and tumultuous life of a little girl who suddenly has to grow up to survive in a world full of dangers and uncertainties.
