The wondrously meaningful, Christian-mythological creature "unicorn," which medieval belief held could only be captured with the help of a virgin, has continued to inspire poets and artists even in post-medieval times. One of them is Rainer Maria Rilke. "There are tapestries here, Abalone, wall tapestries. I imagine you are there, six tapestries, come, let us pass slowly by..." Thus begins Rilke's description of the six famous tapestries "La Dame à la Licorne." As secretary to Auguste Rodin, Rilke lived in Paris for a time around 1900, at the Hôtel Biron, now the Musée Rodin. During these years of his stay, he was preparing a book that Rilke began in Rome in 1904 and completed in Leipzig in 1910: The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge. They contain the description of the tapestries. But they are more than just descriptions.
