The encounter with Auguste Rodin profoundly changed Rilke's work: Rodin's sensual-erotic watercolors - "those strange, indescribable sheets" - deeply unsettled the poet. During his time as Rodin's private secretary, as well as in countless conversations and studio visits, Rilke engaged with the sculptor's works and methods more intensely than with any other artist. The fascination that these images held for him is reflected in his recurring attempts to articulate the "captivating beauty" and the ineffable nature of these works.
