In 1946, Hans Baumhauer sent twenty sketches as samples of his skills as an illustrator (in addition to his undisputed reputation as a stained glass artist) to Kurt Wolff, the famous publisher who had to emigrate in 1933 but had already founded his own publishing house in the USA in 1945.
