Tourism is a significant economic factor worldwide that also has an important cultural aspect. "Religion in Modern Tourism" addresses for the first time the question of the relationship between tourism and religion, a topic that has been largely avoided until now, as tourism and religion occupy opposing poles on our mental map: tourism is seen as a superficial pastime, while religion is viewed as a profound encounter with the transcendent. However, the connection is evident. Religious guidelines influence travel behavior, and religious organizations have a shaping impact on tourism. Conversely, visiting religious sites such as monasteries, churches, temples, stupas, pyramids, or mosques often marks the highlight of a journey. Religions are an irreplaceable asset for tourism.
