Eichendorff's poems are among the most renowned works of German Romanticism; however, this has not led to a better understanding of them. For a long time, they were dismissed as harmless songs of wandering students, as superficial depictions of nature and moods. In the meantime, it has become clear that the recurring images of forest and homeland carry a deeper significance, and that complex symbols are hidden behind the formulaic expressions of this poetry: "The experience of the modern element in Eichendorff, which is perhaps only now becoming apparent, leads most directly to the center of the poetic content. It is truly anticonscervative: a rejection of the authoritative, particularly the authority of the self over the soul." (Theodor W.
