The Pali Canon of Theravada Buddhism, which is currently the dominant Buddhist tradition in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, is traditionally divided into three "baskets": The first primarily contains monastic discipline for monks and nuns as well as legal regulations, the second includes the discourses of the Buddha, and the third consists of scholastic teachings. The "Basket of Discourses" (Sanskrit: Sutta-Pitaka) of the Buddha includes five collections, among them the "Grouped Collection" with more than seven thousand sermons. Its name comes from the attempt to compile Suttas of similar themes. The Samyutta Nikaya, with its 56 groups, unites material of very different origins and characteristics. Initially, it features monk poetry, aphorisms, riddles, and spells, followed by some groups that are primarily dogmatically and didactically oriented.
