This book has a multifaceted history: on one hand, it contains the fairy tale that the Hamburg painter Philipp Otto Runge transcribed from folk tradition, which was later included by the Brothers Grimm in their collection of fairy tales. On the other hand, it features illustrations created by Marcus Behmer in 1913. This small book was first published in 1920 and is one of those publications that best exemplifies the bibliophilic aims of the Insel Verlag. Through a conscious choice of paper, typeface, layout, format, and illustration, a edition was produced that is rightly appreciated by book lovers and experts alike—as Hans A. Halbey wrote—as "one of the most perfect works of book art of the twentieth century." Now, a third—festive—edition is being presented: with colored images, the reproduction of which is based on a copy of the work colored by Marcus Behmer.
