Investigations into the structure and functioning of institutions, organizational forms, and administrative bodies provide an important access point for a better understanding of the political and societal development of statehood in late medieval cities. In this context, the historical interest in administration extends beyond legal and constitutional forms to the everyday execution and its changes, focusing on the actual realization of power. This requires a broad source base that, in addition to the normative so-called legal source texts, also takes into account the written documentation of practice, such as council and court minutes as well as city accounts. The example of the city of Schaffhausen offers good conditions for this. The present study systematically examines the key institutions and offices of the city of Schaffhausen from 1400 to 1550.
