Product details

Dominik Eller examines the use of large-scale electrode boilers that can convert surplus electricity from renewable energy sources into hot water or steam for district heating networks. The study explores both current and future potentials and applications of the technology known as "Power-to-Heat." To quantify the potential, the surplus electricity generated in future power systems and the district heating consumption are simulated on an hourly basis for all of Germany. By comparing the simultaneous electricity and district heating load profiles, the surplus electricity that can be integrated into district heating networks using electrode boilers is quantified. Finally, the economic viability is assessed, and the additional potential through the use of thermal storage is evaluated.
