Interest in him is greater than ever: no European political or theoretical discussion can do without him. Thomas Hobbes is regarded as the founder of absolute sovereignty and the originator of European political thought. The "Leviathan" symbolizes absolute authority, and for some, even terror, dictatorship, and tyranny. Yet, at the dawn of the European modern era, Thomas Hobbes was a fighter against unquestioned traditions and superstition. The eight-volume Hobbes Encyclopedia by Alfred J. Noll provides a reliable guide through the diverse research on Hobbes and illustrates how important it is today to engage with the works of Thomas Hobbes. Volume I of the encyclopedia includes entries from superstition to civil war, while the concurrently published "International Thomas Hobbes Bibliography" gathers over 6,000 titles published since the early 20th century about Hobbes' life and work, thereby closing a long-standing research gap.
