This volume brings together lectures delivered at the XIVth Colloquium of the International Alfred Döblin Society at the Université Marc Bloch in Strasbourg from October 2 to 4, 2003. Döblin's odyssey began in 1940 following the German invasion of France and lasted until his death in 1957. Thus, he became a border crosser in the geographical sense. At the same time, he was also a boundary transgressor in the intellectual sense, as illustrated by his masterful play with various literary discourses. The lectures presented in Strasbourg address aspects of intertextuality, interdisciplinarity, and interculturality in his later works, as well as key moments in the biography and the socially critical engagement of the intellectual in post-war Germany and Europe.
