In hardly any other country is the internet as heavily restricted as in the People's Republic of China. The political leadership in Beijing controls users' access to the internet, systematically filters the web for critical keywords, and turns online service providers into agents of censorship. However, the "Great Firewall" has gaps: in many instances, Chinese internet users manage to circumvent the control mechanisms. The Chinese government faces a dilemma, as the internet simultaneously serves as a growth engine for the economy.
