The story unfolds during the time when the older of the two daughters is sixteen, having spent several years in a Catholic children's home. She lives with her father in the "houses" by the river, away from the German town, among the displaced and uprooted in a world outside of the world. She longs to belong to the Germans, wishes to be named Ursula or Susanne, and dreams of a craftsman she could marry to escape her Russian heritage. But the long-feared father locks her away. She is not allowed to wear red shoes; she is supposed to clean at home. In her mother’s taffeta dress, she flees into freedom.
