The former Munich commissioner Max Raintaler and his girlfriend Monika are celebrating a birthday at "Da Giovanni," their favorite Italian restaurant and local hangout. Both have been close friends with Giovanni for years, and Max also plays soccer with him. Their cozy evening is interrupted when Giovanni gets into an argument with two young men, whom Max promptly throws out. The next day, Giovanni is found murdered in his restaurant.
