Joseph Mendelssohn, originally from Jever in Oldenburg, was a free-spirited writer who published his first collection of poems at the age of 21. He became known for his three-volume work "Parisian Letters," which consisted of letters he wrote during his stay in Paris, depicting life in the French metropolis. In doing so, he followed in the tradition of Heinrich Heine and Carl Ludwig Börne. Mendelssohn's work was multifaceted: he wrote poems, plays, and satirical writings, produced prose and non-fiction books, was the editor of his own newspaper, and worked as an editor and translator of French plays. His travel report on Oldenburg and Jever is interesting in many respects. He chose Hamburg as his main residence, and he was not yet 40 years old when he died in poverty. This volume provides a detailed exploration of his life and work for the first time.
