Paul Herrmann (1866-1930) interestingly depicts the diverse nature of Iceland with its volcanoes, glaciers, and highlands, as well as the history of Iceland and its people in this first volume of his travel memoirs. He engagingly shares his experiences with the land and its inhabitants, which he gathered during his research trips in the early 20th century. Paul Herrmann undertook research trips to Iceland in 1904, 1908, 1911, and 1914 with the support of the Prussian Ministry of Education.
