Jürgen Kaube is the editor and education expert of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the father of three children. From this dual experience, he formulates a provocative thesis: School, as it is now, is too dumb for our children; it is a flawed construction. It teaches children things they neither need nor want to know and that they reliably forget almost completely. Worse still: Today's school reacts far too strongly to ever-new demands placed on it from the outside. The digitalization of the classroom is just as nonsensical as the spelling reform or the language lab were. What is needed now, says Kaube, is a reduction to the essentials: Children should learn to think, and that is what school is all about. Today, it primarily teaches them what can be easily tested. And that is the exact opposite of thinking.
