Product details

Rancière writes about conflict. About the conflict that founds politics and the conflict that aesthetics can ignite. Politics is preceded by a division of the sensible and thus a 'first aesthetics' - politics itself is the struggle over the arrangement of the visible and the sayable. Jacques Rancière identifies three major historical formations of these orders of the sensible: the ethical regime, the regime of representation, and the aesthetic regime of art. Rancière marks the deployment of the aesthetic regime, which underpins our thinking to this day, with Schiller. It is characterized by an ambivalence that makes art conceivable as its own experiential space, while also describing it as an experiential space that could become a common experiential space for all, thereby inscribing a revolutionary potential into the aesthetic.
