The Yôjôkun (Rules for Life Care) by the Japanese polymath Kaibara Ekiken from 1713 offers, like few other works of its time, fascinating insights into the everyday world of early modern Japanese society. Rooted in (neo)Confucian and Taoist traditions, the text provides information on practical life and social behavior rules, dietary habits, household management, hygiene, clothing, as well as body image, sexuality, and taboos, as well as diseases and remedies. Many of the wisdoms, practical advice, and physical exercises mentioned in the Yôjôkun are still part of Japan's cultural memory today, making the Yôjôkun an important reference source for culturally oriented research on Japan.
