This interdisciplinary study provides a theoretical justification for the connection between language, speaking, and identity, linking it to the postmodern discussion in cultural and social sciences. It advocates for the retention of the problematic concept of identity by emphasizing the linguistic-communicative constitution of self-constructs through a linguistically oriented redefinition that draws on sociological and psychological theories of identity. In doing so, it addresses a gap that persists in linguistics despite the communicative-pragmatic turn and its accompanying focus on language users: the concepts of speaker identity and language identity are positioned as central elements in language theory. The proposed model of multiple language identities ultimately highlights the role of language.
